Rachel Hawe

Rachel Hawe, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Kinesiology and director of the NeuroRehabilitation Across the Lifespan (NeuRAL) Laboratory, has been awarded a $30,000 pilot grant from the RESTORE Center at Stanford University. The grant is entitled “Video-based analysis of bilateral arm use in children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy”. This work is a collaboration with Stephen Guy (co-I) in computer science. Drs. Hawe and Guy are using computer vision to augment traditional assessments of bilateral arm use in children with cerebral palsy. Traditional assessments are qualitative and time-intensive to score. In this project, Drs. Hawe and Guy are developing a video-based analysis pipeline and visualization toolkit that will facilitate the assessment of bilateral arm use, provide summative figures, and automatically calculate metrics reflecting arm usage. The RESTORE Center is an NIH-funded center focused on the analysis of movement for rehabilitation using sensor and video technology. The pilot funds are accompanied by mentoring and support from the center.
